I'm listening to them now while I focus on writing this newsletter. But the rise in electronic binaural beats means that you can use them yourself in many more areas of your life, whilst getting on with other tasks. In fact I choose tuning fork combinations and the sounds I play in and out of a session based on their binaural frequency. When you're in the soundspace having a gong bath, especially with crystal bowls and tuning forks, you'll often be getting a binaural experience as part of the wider consciousness shifts I'm creating in and around you. Although your ears will try to pick the frequencies out, if they are targeted left/right, it makes it much more specific.** ** Don't forget that wearing headphones is really important when experiencing binaural sound. ![]() Gamma frequencies are heightening, and can sometimes induce anxiety when over used - think the most intense trance music. The human ear starts to hear at 20Hz, so by this level our senses will be fully active. ![]() By encouraging consistent frequency through binaural beats we can improve concentration, alertness and problem solving skills. Our waking state, this is the frequency our brainwaves are un during normal waking time. Good evening beats, or for stress/anxiety. Your conscious mind will still be on in this state, but soothed and calmed. Theta beats are ideal for meditation - in theory by listening to binaural beats at the theta level, you can shift your brain into meditation manually. This is where I try to take you during a soundscape. Great for insomnia, or bypassing nightmares There are five frequency patterns of the sound spectrum, so here's how to choose a binaural beat:ĭreamless, deep sleep. You can find Binaural Beat playlists on Spotify and many other providers now. Binaural beats do this too, and when they are electronically created, we can really refine the frequencies to hit very specific brainwave states. The more you listen to them the deeper you drop away from consciousness. If that's a difficult concept, then think about trance music, or drone sounds (such as a gong) - these are designed to literally trip you out, to transcend, to bypass the thinking mind. When the brain is repeatedly given the same binaural repeat, it will start to 'entrain' - this means the brainwaves will start to adjust themselves to come into the same frequency as the repetitive beat. ![]() ![]() This is why you'll never find a gong or crystal bowl with a 4 figure frequency). (Worth noting that the frequency has to be lower than 1000Hz, as beyond that our active senses fully kick in and brain is LISTENING to rather than FEELING the sound. The difference in FREQUENCY between the two original signals is called the binaural beat.įor example, if the left ear hears a frequency of 200Hz, and the right hears 210Hz, then the binaural beat is 10Hz. The sound signal from each ear arrives in the brain, where the two signals are combined to create a single sound which is what your brain tells you is what you are 'hearing'. The basic science is that your ears are like a set of stereo headphones - and they actually hear sound slightly differently to each other. Defined as an 'auditory illusion,' there is much evidence to support their use in reducing stress, increasing focus, improving sleep, and enhancing long term memory. Binaural Beats are one of the most accessible and super easy ways to work with sound to support wellbeing.
